What are the scopes where tempered glass must be used?
Safety glass must be used in the following eleven environments:
1. Inclined assembly windows, various ceilings (including skylights, skylights), and suspended ceilings. When the height of the roof glass is greater than 5 meters from the ground, tempered laminated glass must be used, and the thickness of the laminated film should not be less than 0.76mm.
2. Sightseeing elevators and their outer enclosures.
3. Floor panels used to withstand pedestrians.
4. External windows of buildings with seven floors or more. If it is hollow glass, safety hollow glass must be used; if it is double-layer glass, in principle, both sides are tempered glass; sliding windows (glass area less than 1.5 square meters) do not require safety glass.
5. Window glass with an area greater than 1.5 square meters or floor-to-ceiling windows with the bottom edge of the glass less than 500mm from the decoration surface; regardless of the number of floors and height, the glass that meets this article should use safety glass. Frameless glass doors, regardless of the size of the area, should use tempered glass with a thickness of not less than 10mm.
6. Full-glass curtain wall refers to a glass curtain wall composed of glass ribs and glass panels, which do not require the use of tempered glass. Commonly used metal frame glass curtain walls (including point-type glass curtain walls) must use safety glass.
7. Observation windows and observation holes of aquariums and swimming pools; tempered laminated glass should be used for underwater glass.
8. Entrances, foyers, and other parts of public buildings. If the entrance foyers on the ground floor of residential units are enclosed by glass partitions, all of their glass must use safety glass.
9. Indoor partitions, bathroom enclosures, and screens. For windowsills that are lower than the specified requirements (less than 0.8M for public buildings and less than 0.9M for residential buildings), if a fixed window with a height equivalent to the railing is set at the bottom of the window and there are window frames around it as a protective measure, and the glass is laminated glass with a thickness of not less than 6+6mm, then no railing is required. If the height is less than 0.9M and it is an openable window, a railing must be made. Residential balcony sliding doors with a glass area of less than 1.5 square meters do not need safety glass.
10. For the railings of stairs, balconies, platform corridors, and atriums; for glass railings that do not bear horizontal loads, it is recommended to use tempered laminated glass. If the glass can be fixed around and is only used for enclosure, the thickness is recommended to be 6+6mm. For glass railings that bear horizontal loads, when the glass is located at a building height of 5M or above, tempered laminated glass with a thickness of not less than 12mm should be used (the specific thickness should be determined based on thrust, span, etc.)
11. For other parts that are prone to collision and impact and cause human injury, tempered laminated glass must be used for glass awnings, glass shutters, etc. The thickness of ordinary specifications of glass awnings is recommended to be 12 (upper) + 8 (lower) mm, and the thickness of glass shutters is recommended to be 6+6mm.
Since the selection of glass should pay attention to its maximum allowable area and thickness, and the relationship between types, the current structural professionals have calculated the wind loads at various heights of multi-story and high-rise buildings, so tempered glass can be used with confidence.
